In 1795, Tula revolted against his white masters. He was publicly tortured to death in the same place where this impressive statue now stands. After the rebellion was crushed, the Curaçao government formulated new rules defining the rights of slaves on the island. This made living conditions a little less harsh. Tula is revered as a champion of human rights and independence. The Tula Monument can be found on the south coast of the island, near the Holiday Beach Hotel.
